Harecastle Tunnel

Harecastle Tunnel

The centre picture was taken crossing the Chirk Aqueduct with the Great Western Railway Viaduct in the background: both were built by Thomas Telford. Note the distinctive colour of the canal water in and around the Harecastle Tunnel caused by the ironstone in the ground. The tunnel, also built by Telford is actually the second of three and is 2926 yards long (2676 metres).

Heading for Harecastle

The Anderton Boat Lift, opened in 1875, is one of only two boat lifts in the UK (the other is the modern Falkirk Wheel in Scotland) lifts boats 50 feet between the River Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal at Anderton in Cheshire. It closed in 1983 after corrosion problems but was restored and reopened by British Waterways in 2002.
