| Feb 2011 - Lake District - Lakeshore and Claife Heights Walk | |
|
We started the walk from Harrow Slack car park and took the metaled path alongside the lake. This walk could be started from Bowness if you cross over by way of the ferry and walk up a few yards to turn right on to the road that leads you to the lakeside path. We are left to right, John, Dave, Josie, Becky plus me, Kath the photographer. |

The weather was a little overcast with grey clouds but it was nice to be out and in good company. After taking a few shots of the lake and boats we carried on until we came to a sign-posted footpath leading up onto the lower slopes of Claife Heights. It is a stony path through trees and not much talking was done for a while as we went ever higher. There were nice views down towards the lake and the hills from the path before we turned towards the top of the track. |

Once out of the woods we came to lovely open pasture land and a road led us eventually down into the small hamlet of Far Sawrey but not before Josie and I took yet more photos. I also managed to walk off without my walking pole and Becky very kindly trotted back to the gate for it. (It was her fault because she reminded me far too early not to forget it!) As she handed it back she gave me that look that said “The poor dear, she’s getting on a bit”. By then as you can see from the photo the sky had cleared a little and it was quite warm as we strolled along. |

Becky took Dave and Josie up a small lane in Far Sawrey to show them a cottage that she and her sister Ruth had stayed in a short while ago. I just wanted a nice cup of tea and a sit down and looking down the road we spotted a public house, the signs outside said “Cream Teas” so once we all regrouped it was decided to partake of said cream teas. Dave ordered for us, I was sharing John’s scone, not really wanting anything too sweet, but looking forward to my tea. We were all amused when our order arrived, the waitress brought out five coffees and scones; no one complained we still don’t know how cream teas got to be cream coffees. |

Before leaving the village we took a look around the church, it has some stained glass windows and seating for at least 400, which is surprising because the village is quite small with maybe 150 occupants. St Peter's is a building in a superb situation with views of the surrounding fells. The footpath alongside it leads down to the Far Sawrey - Bowness road and we took a path across the field and through the kissing gate to carry on towards the road. |

It was not long before we reached the main road that would lead us on to the lakeside path again. We took the path down towards the ferry just to the side of the road, enjoying the views that opened up of Lake Windermere. Before returning to the car I took a last look at the view from the lakeside and could not resist a last photo shot. |
